The crisp, dry leaves outside remind me of… laundry! I know, a strange connection, but let me explain. When we remodeled a small room on our second floor into a laundry room, we installed 3 fold-away drying racks on the walls.  Besides the cheery yellow paint in this room, the old-fashioned drying racks are my favorite things. After the clothes have been cleaned in the (modern) washing machine, I hang them on the racks to dry. After a day, they are dry, stiff, and a little bit crispy, which I find quite amusing. So I pop them into the electric dryer for a quick spin to soften up.

I like saving money each month by using the drying racks. An electric clothes dryer costs, on average, $18 per month to run. This situates it somewhere in the middle of typical household appliances or tools. More expensive to use than the TV, table saw, or hair dryer. Less expensive to run than a chest freezer, electric water heater, or dehumidifier. The dryer consumes about the same amount of energy as your refrigerator.

The wooden racks are a simple, sturdy Amish-style design. They easily support shirts, pants, undergarments, and towels. Be cautioned: sheets and blankets get unwieldy when trying to drape them over the rails (but if done successfully they form cool forts for your cats to hide in). Happy autumn and happy laundry!

I’m thrilled she finds such pleasure in doing the laundry. I’m also glad she took my underwear off the rack before snapping the photo.
