My husband is an Anglophile. Despite the surname ‘Spain’ he loves everything England. That might have, subconsciously, played a role in our choice of home in Historic Huffman. From our porch we have a bird’s eye view of the traffic circle at Fourth and Huffman—and traffic circles or “roundabouts” are VERY British.

Sometimes we wile away the evening on our porch, talking and casually observing the roundabout. [I would tell you that we have, on occasion, enjoyed a Smithwick’s or Bass and talked in fake British accents while watching the roundabout but that would sound a little crazy, now wouldn’t it?]

The intersection of Fourth and Huffman is a four-way stop. I suspect the roundabout was added to discourage excessive speed on Huffman between Third and Fifth Streets, and it works. But it can also be entertaining to watch the traffic dilemmas occasionally created by a concrete flower-laden circular structure in the middle of the street.

In countries where people drive on the left [like Great Britain], traffic flows clockwise around the roundabout. Conversely, where people drive on the right side of the road [like the good ‘ole US of A], traffic flows counter-clockwise around—hypothetically.

One evening, a pick-up truck pulling a trailer created a four way traffic snare by trying to cut left in front of the traffic circle instead of driving all the way ‘round the roundabout. It took a little time for four vehicles, each headed in different directions, to negotiate and jockey positions until they could go on their respective and merry ways.

I admit, when I first moved to Huffman I cut the roundabout a few times when I thought no one was looking. Then I realized that if I proceed left around the traffic circle, I get to enjoy the beautiful flowers all the way around!

One Response to “Round About Etiquette”

Wow. I’m not sure I’ve heard anyone talk about the roundabout with any emotion before. Maybe it’s time we give the roundabout more love. The flowers are great, but what about a carousel with old Huffy bikes orbiting the center? Oh, what fun.
