General information

This house was built between 1875 and 1898. Records show it was constructed in 1875, but Sanborn fire maps of 1887 do not show it. The 1897-98 Sanborn map shows a structure resembling the footprint of the existing house. The wrap-around front porch and vestibule appear to have been added a short while after construction. City directory information shows that the house was home to two families in 18??. This may have been when additions were made to the original house. It is possible that one of the residents was a servant for the owners of the house.

Shingled gables, with differently shaped and decorated windows; curved porch wraps around whole front projection of the house.

Story

Setting: 25 S. June St., 2006/05/11
Recorded by: Joel Michael on 2012/05/12

After a long day of building and hanging two of three gates on the dog-eared wood fence that extends around the yard, I went inside, showered and returned to the yard just after dark to survey my work. I walked around to the alley through the only remaining opening into our yard to look at the back gate from the outside and determined I was satisfied with it. I noticed a police car in the intersecting alley as I was checking my work, and felt reassured they were keeping an eye on things. So I walked back into the yard through the same opening in order to take a look at the new front gate. It looked fine, too. Before I could turn around to go back inside the house, I heard the words, "Put your hands in the air where I can see them!"

I thought it was a joke. I turned around only to look into the blinding beam of a flashlight. As bright as it was, I could still make out the shape of the gun the police officer was pointing at me. He not so quietly repeated his request. As we were in the middle of my property, I found it odd that a police officer would follow me into my yard and pull a gun on me. But, that's exactly what he did. He didn't listen to much of what I was trying to explain. Instead he tapped on the kitchen window where Danielle was preparing dinner and shouted at her, "Does he belong to you?" Now, I had on several occasions tried to pull a prank on Danielle by surprising her in this very manner. Not being able to see out into the night beyond the window, she too assumed this was some kind of joke. I'm not sure if it was the gun or the badge or the flashlight that made her realize it wasn't me playing a trick. But, in seconds she caught on to what was happening and became irritated with the police officer. The officer, sensing he may have slightly overstepped his bounds, wanted no part of Danielle's wrath and zipped out of the yard into his cruiser.
